Frequently asked questions about EMDR & Brainspotting therapy

FAQs

  • EMDR, or “eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,” uses bilateral stimulation (back-and-forth eye movement and/or other techniques) to process emotions and trauma stored in the brain. This trauma - which is often outside of our conscious awareness - can contribute to the negative and uncomfortable thoughts and feelings you experience in the present. EMDR helps “reprogram” the brain to heal from painful memories and experiences.

Treatment involves eight phases that help you heal the uncomfortable emotions of the past and present, and learn how to think and feel differently about the future. Even if you aren’t aware of having experienced any trauma, EMDR can help you find significant relief from anxiety, overwhelm, phobias and more. Schedule a free consultation to learn more.

  • The motto of Brainspotting is “where you look affects how you feel.” Clients are guided to direct their gaze to different positions, or “brainspots,” in their field of vision. This allows unprocessed emotions and trauma, held in the deeper structures of the brain, to be worked through with the support of the therapist. This can help significantly relieve feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, overwhelm and stress.

Brainspotting can also hep you tap into your creativity and improve your performance (athletic, creative, academic, occupational and more). Brainspotting is helpful for a wide range of issues and has become a highly-popular, go-to approach for many kinds of challenges.

  • I use a wide variety of effective and growth-oriented therapeutic approaches that have been proven to be highly effective in treating and healing anxiety, depression, overwhelm, phobias, trauma/PTSD, burnout and negative thinking. This includes Brainspotting and EMDR, as well as IFS-informed therapy (Internal Family Systems) and other approaches. I am continually honing my skills through professional development, experience, training and consultation.

That said, some clients come to me specifically seeking EMDR or Brainspotting, or are experiencing challenges which are well-suited for these modalities. Others are not familiar with these therapies but become interested once they learn of their potential effectiveness or anxiety, trauma/PTSD, overwhelm, grief and more.

Brainspotting and EMDR have many similarities (in fact, Brainspotting was developed by an EMDR therapist). EMDR has a more structured and comprehensive set of steps and activities to progress through, while Brainspotting is less structured and allows for more flexibility.

At the onset of our work together, we can explore what Brainspotting or EMDR may have to offer in helping you heal and find relief. When it comes to choosing one of these modalities, it is a matter of your personal preference combined with what my therapeutic judgement of what might be most effective, given your unique challenges, strengths and needs.
