Overwhelm can lead to burnout - the mental, emotional and even physical exhaustion that happens when you are under a high level of ongoing stress. You feel swamped and like you’re just going through the motions to make it through the next moment. It’s hard to enjoy things, feel motivated or effective at what you do.
Burnout can be the result of witnessing and working with a lot of stressful, sad and even traumatic situations. While caregivers, first responders, medical personnel, veterinarians, etc. can struggle with burnout, it certainly isn’t limited to these professions, or to work circumstances for that matter.
You might feel anxious, tearful, hopeless and powerless. You can also feel very disconnected from a sense of life satisfaction, purpose and meaning. It’s not unusual to experience physical symptoms as well - headaches, sleep problems, chest pain, stomach issues (it’s always a good idea to get any physical symptoms checked out by a medical provider).
